Journeys Decodable Readers

Reading Tip #1 - It is important for your child to learn sight words with automaticity. They should just be able to see the word and read it. Sounding out these words can be tricky because one or more of the letters do not make the sounds that they are supposed to make .When your child comes to a sight word that they don't know, they can try to quickly retrieve it from their memory. If your child is still stuck, just read it for them. You can take a note that this word needs to be practiced. Some students must be exposed to a sight work many, many times before it is known.

Reading Tip #2 - When your child comes to a word that they should be able to sound out, let them try. Encourage your child to place their finger underneath the word and slide from left to right saying the sounds that match the letters. If your child is still stuck after attempting to read the word for about 3-5 seconds, read the word for them. You can model how to sound out each sound and then blend it together to form the word. Ex. r-u-sh, rush.

Reading Tip #3 - Research has shown that it is best to provide corrective feedback immediately. If your child is reading and they make an error, stop your child. Kindly read the word for them. Ask them to place their finger underneath the word and slide across while reading it for you. This step is very important piece of learning how to read.
